If you consider little or no punctuation, mad house spelling, absolute lack of sentence construction, talking/writing in bottom-line-ese detrimental to our language, then the only answer to this question is a resounding yes! However, thankfully there remain those purveyors of our language who do covet a sensible communication. Even the latest technological devices used for downloading books extend employment of grammar tools. Therefore, let us take a look at non-mushy brains while proper language and grammar use take a back seat.
Punctuation
Yes, it is true, texting usually includes no punctuation. Of course some of us old fogies or English teacher types feel greatly compelled to put in a period, yea even a comma once in a while. All in all, periods are more likely to make an appearance in texting, since commas are just a nuisance any time.
Abbreviations
When people talk about abbreviating in text messages, they are not referring to the use of contractions or possessives found in literature. What they mean is using numbers or single letters for words. Of course combining various letters makes for interesting phrases. The one I’m probably most guilty of is TY for thank you.
Spelling
Hand in hand with abbreviations, comes the text version of spelling. You is u; are becomes r; because is bc. There are so many others. If you don’t want to spell it out, just invent a spelling of your own, your intended recipient will surely understand.
Becoming a Replacement
Psychologists and educators agree that after using a concept over seven times, it becomes a habit. Thus, the idea that texting is likely to appear in considerably more rough drafts, lurks in the not so distant future. So, even if you think you are way too intelligent to ever succumb to its use in these venues, you might want to reevaluate.
I am just thinking with all that occupies a person’s brain, why deluge it even more with habits having marginal useful benefit. Is this supposed to strengthen memory? What is the purpose of texting anyway? I thought just plain old emailing was pretty special; oh, but texting is emailing on the phone; such an amazing concept! Well, guess I must add that when I texted my young adult son for the first time, his text response was, “Whoa, Mom, you’re rockin’ my world here!” (Quoted exactly, I might add.) It’s amazing how hip one can feel after that! But, while composing that research paper or master’s thesis, do remember to use the necessary grammar and spelling rules so you will receive that impressive grade or expensive diploma. Most of all, forget about any language shortcuts.
