It’s scientifically proven… at some point or another, whether we like it or not, we’ll all have that dreaded day when we realize we’re holding the newspaper an arm’s length away to read it.

Presbyopia – the inability to see near objects clearly – is usually first noticed in the ages between 40 and 50, and try as we might it’s not something we can avoid. The good news is that the market is awash with reading glasses and multifocal contact lenses to ease the problem. The even better news is that recently, an app has emerged claiming the ability to reduce the condition’s effects and reduce our ‘eye age’ by as much as 20%.

Innovation, it seems, was clearly focused on the product itself rather than clever naming, as developers ‘Ucansi’ (did someone say cheesy?) prepare to launch their app-child ‘GlassesOff’.

How does it work?

The technology relies on training the eyes to see patterns known as Gabor Patches, which in plain terms are blurry lines produced through exploiting a grey background. Development has been lengthy, and it is reported that a large majority of subjects were able to see as much as two lines further down on an eye test after undergoing the procedure.

How much will it cost?

So that’s the good news. The bad news is that the app looks like it’s going to set you back around £60 ($96). Added to this is the fact that due to the need for a top notch display for the software to work, it will initially be limited solely to new versions of the iPhone – costing somewhere in the region of £500 ($802).

And the wallet assault doesn’t end there. £60 ($96) buys you the initial app and three months worth of training, however Ucansi have indicated that in order to receive further training after this period, a monthly fee will apply.

That said though, rumours are spreading fast that the company may well be looking into converting their software onto a Windows supported platform. As well as this, with the prices of corrective laser surgery stretching comfortably into the thousands, this might suddenly sound like a much more persuasive deal after all.

The future?

Certainly this is a very intriguing app and one that’s worth keeping an eye on to see how things develop. What I find most exciting though is that this could well be a step toward aiding other eyesight problems without invasive surgery… perhaps we’ll see an iCure for problems like myopia in the near future?

If you have an iPhone 4S, you have the ability to use Siri, a personal assistant that helps with multiple tasks, from sending text messages to giving specific information.

Through voice dictation, you simply tell Siri a demand, such as to send an email, or you can ask a question, such as information about the weather, and Siri will either perform the task or find your answers. Siri doesn’t need to be installed and it doesn’t need to be taught what to do. Through the use of WiFi, 3G and Apple technology, it is able to recognize your requests and provide answers. If Siri doesn’t understand or needs more information, it will ask you questions to get a better grasp on what you’re looking for.

Some iPhone 4S users haven’t yet used Siri or don’t use it for all of its possibilities. If you own an iPhone 4S, you need to use Siri for the following.

1. Listen and respond to text messages and emails.

Rather than fumble with your phone to read emails or text message, you can instruct Siri to read them aloud. This is great when you’re incapable of handling your phone to read these notifications, such as while driving or working out. Along with reading them aloud, you can also instruct Siri to respond for you. Simply tell Siri what to say, and it will do all the work. And there’s no limitations, so you can have an entire conversation via text message without ever typing a single thing.

Siri can also transcribe anything for you, not just emails and text messages. If you want to write a note to yourself, you can speak it instead of typing it. This is great if you don’t have time to sit and type something out or if you’re just not that great of a typist to begin with.

2. Manage your schedule.

Siri can help you become more organized by staying on top of your schedule. Since it is capable of reading your calendar and your address book, it can tell you what your schedule looks like for the day as well as where certain appointments may be located. You can also tell Siri to add events to your calendar, and you can even tell it to remind you about certain upcoming events.

3. Find out information.

With a smartphone, you have the Internet at your fingertips, but sometimes you’re not sure where to look for specific information, or you don’t feel like searching through websites to find the one piece of information you need. Instead, you can have Siri do this. If you’re lost, Siri can tell you where you are and how to get home. If you want to know what the weather will be like on your business trip, Siri will tell you. If you want to know where to get a hamburger at 3 o’clock in the morning, Siri will let you know.

Siri is a great addition to the iPhone 4S, and since it’s capable of so many functions, it’s a great personal assistant to have. If you have yet to use Siri, you need to use it for these three functions. It will make your life easier, and you’ll soon wonder how you ever lived without it.

TomTom iPhone App vs Garmin iPhone App

With more and more people now using their Smartphones to provide them with a GPS solution over an actual physical standalone device, it wasn’t going to be too long until both powerhouse manufacturers got into the game and started trying to get a slice of this ever popular market. Admittedly it took Garmin a little bit longer than TomTom to release their own iPhone App for GPS navigation, with their product only appearing over the last couple of years – but now both have been in the market for a while I thought that it was time to do a quick comparison to figure out which one is best and comes out on top.

Before you go any further though, my top-line assessment is that the Garmin iPhone App (which goes by the name of Garmin StreetPilot) is the one which has the best value for money. Read on for why I believe this – which I hope will help you make the right choice if you are considering an App to help you navigate with your iPhone.

Which Has the Better User-Interface?

I much prefer the Garmin interface over the TomTom one. The icons appear to be much clearer and chunkier – plus they very closely mimic what you get if you are familiar with using a Garmin Nuvi device. Considering the Nuvi is the best-selling GPS on the planet this will probably be a serious consideration for many iPhone users who are used to navigating with a Garmin GPS product.

How Voice Directions Compare?

The Garmin wins out over the TomTom App in this instance too. The voice directions coming out of the Garmin StreetPilot seem to be a lot clearer and sound more human, rather than the tinny and computerized sounding TomTom voice files. What I also like about the Garmin iPhone App is that it also offers audible warnings when you are driving over the speed limits – very much like the physical Nuvi devices do. In addition to that the Garmin App will reduce the volume of your iPhone music’s when speaking directions, rather than cutting out the audio like the TomTom version does.

Free Traffic Alerts on Garmin GPS iPhone App

When it comes to GPS navigation one of the most valuable assets a driver can have is fore-warning of any traffic jams or potential congestion. If you decide to buy the Garmin App over the TomTom version you will benefit from getting free traffic alerts built-in to the software. On the other hand, TomTom have made their HD Traffic technology a paid for add-on – which comes with a $19.99 annual charge which is quite high for iPhone App charges when compared to other downloads.

TomTom Traffic Alerts Tend to be More Reliable on iPhone

Having said that, you do get what you pay for and independent tests that I have seen conducted on Youtube by other GPS reviewers seems to show that the TomTom traffic can be a little bit more reliable on the iPhone – so this is something you need to weigh up when making your download purchase.

Conclusion and Price Comparison on the iTunes Store

Both GPS apps are available to purchase on the Apple iTunes store. The Garmin StreetPilot App costs ten dollars more than the TomTom version. You can buy Garmin for $59.99 and TomTom for only $49.99. If it was me I would go for the Garmin product, but then I have always used Garmin devices so will tend to lean more naturally towards a user-interface and manufacturer that I am familiar with.

Generally though, both iPhone GPS apps are very similar to each other, with only small differences which I have highlighted above. The biggest differentiator will probably come down to the price variance plus the additional charges incurred should you want to add traffic capability onto the TomTom version.

If you are thinking about purchasing one of these apps though, I would highly recommend that you first check another supplier on the market. Navigon are a German company who produce the MobileNavigator iPhone App. This software seems to rate higher with online reviewers than both Garmin and TomTom so don’t feel that you need to go with one of the large and better known brands. It’s definitely worth shopping around before you buy.

About the Author: Mike Smalley is a GPS enthusiast who runs the popular www.gpsnavigationdvd.net website with other GPS experts. Recently he published an article relating to the savings a Ford driver can make if they install and use the latest 2012 Ford Navigation DVD. It’s possible for you to save on gas bills and your carbon footprint due to recent research conducted by the Navteq Company.

Getaround is a new application allowing regular people to rent out their extra vehicles. The service has been going strong since May 2010. Traditional rental car businesses often have stringent requirements for people who rent cars. Given the recession, many people cannot meet the requirements or the deposits. Getaround helps people without vehicles gain mobility. It also allows people to make a profit from their vehicles.

Who Will Benefit From Getaround?

The concept is ideal for people without adequate funds or need for vehicles on a full-time basis. Cars cost money. Monthly payments, insurance and maintenance must all be considered. Rental fees are exorbitant compared to the time the car is actually driven while in the renter’s possession. Current rental insurance is also incredibly expensive. Getaround is a viable option for a certain market.

According to statistics, the average owner’s car is only driven eight percent of its entire life. This leaves considerable time for a car to sit idle. Renting a car during its down-time can significantly increase an owner’s cash flow. Earnings could even pay off the entire monthly car payment. This is a great way to earn extra money, help others and save the environment.

What to Expect When Renting Through Getaround

This new California startup is located in San Francisco. Participants can post cars for as low as $7 per hour with insurance included. The company’s insurance policy is used when renters use other owners’ cars. Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway sponsors insurance for vehicles featured on Getaround. Vehicles may also have WiFi and GPS included.

There is no cost to join. Drivers register online and search for cars directly on the iPhone application. This is a novel concept for someone who just needs a vehicle for a couple of hours for an interview, shopping, spa treatments, a date or a short day trip.

The company makes 40 percent of the rental price of the vehicle. The price is determined by the car owner. This is a considerable profit, but it still allows renters to make a considerable amount on rentals. Because of the 40 percent profit, prices vary considerably.

About the Getaround Application

The Getaround application is developed specifically for iOS devices. Rentals can be reserved or posted from any location through the Getaround application. The application is growing in popularity because of its convenience and affordability. The services are focused on residents in the United States but are expanding into Canada. Currently, Getaround primarily serves customers in San Diego and San Francisco.

Getaround Expansion Plans

Getaround is expanding into other areas of the United States thanks to a $1.725 million grant from the federal government. This is the first grant of its kind for peer-to-peer car-sharing. Portland, Oregon is promoting this program with the help of the Federal Highway Administration and Portland State University.

New laws in Oregon lower the risk of owners participating in program. Owners can rent out their vehicles without being affected by the accidents of renters. Car sharing shifts transportation patterns and fuel consumption. This saves the environment and fuel sources when vehicles are only rented when needed.

Consider the Getaround Application and Service for Future Rentals

Consider the new Getaround app. It is a convenient way to find a car fast. Even if the car is needed on a short notice, the iPhone Getaround application is at each consumer’s fingertips. Consider using Getaround service next time a rental car is needed to help with errands.

Another useful online service is Kanetix auto insurance. With Kanetix, you can compare auto insurance quotes offered by top insurance providers in Canada. In just minutes, you could save hundreds of dollars on your insurance. Kanetix offers a free, easy, and secure online quote comparison service. Apply online today.

The Apple iPad and iPhone have taken the consumer technology world by storm. Their capacitive touch screen interface, intuitive operating system and abundance of applications and accessories have made the previous generation of consumer products largely obsolete. One of the most exciting and practical uses of the new Apple products is entertainment on long car journeys. Available accessories, such as iPad and iPhone cases, and a wide variety of “apps” make Apple’s iOS product line a joy to use in the car. Here are a range of apps that make a car trip exciting for everyone involved.

Music and Book Apps

Nothing passes the time on a long car ride like music and books. Apple iPhone and iPad products provide this car essential like little else. One great music app is Spotify mobile. Spotify requires a $9.99 monthly subscription, however provides access to a seemingly endless database of music which includes both popular hits and the more obscure side of the industry. One caveat of this highly popular music service is that it requires an Internet connection, so if you are using an iPad, make sure it is 3G-enabled, before you spend money for a Spotify subscription.

There are two great book reader apps available for Apple products. The first is Apple iBooks. This book service comes preinstalled on iOS devices, and offers a large library of free and for-purchase literature that can be read and annotated on your device’s touch screen. Another book reader app is Amazon Kindle. Similar to iBooks, Kindle provides access to Amazon’s massive eBook library at sometimes cheaper prices than iBooks.

There are times when reading can be difficult on a long car ride, particularly if you have motion sickness issues or in cases when the driver wants to be included in the fun everyone else is having. For situations such as these, there are audiobook apps available on the Apple iPad and iPhone, which will read an eBook to the whole car. Notable among these is Audible, an audiobook app with the most for-purchase titles of any app.

Road Trip Games

There are a wide variety of road trip games on iOS devices. If for no other reason than to distract misbehaving children, the car ride games on these devices provide endless hours of entertainment. Some games even provide the opportunity for interactive gameplay and education. One of these, RoadTripBingo HD, displays a colorful and interactive bingo board on which a car’s occupants can compete by searching for items on their bingo board out the window. RoadTripBingo HD turns bingo into a scavenger hunt. Some examples of searchable items are state capitals, churches and ambulances.

Another popular iOS road trip game is the License Plate Travel Game. This interactive application keeps track of points based on who sees the first license plate from a new state or country. A player receives two points for being the first to see the license plate of a new area, and one point for seeing another license plate from an area already seen.

Whichever apps you choose for your long car journeys, it’s always a good idea to use iPad or iPhone cases to avoid damage to your device – especially if your kids are using it to play RoadTripBingo.

There are thousands of useful apps for hikers, but before listing the best of them it’s worth taking a moment to think about what iPhones shouldn’t be used for. Navigation is high on the list, and mountain rescue services around the world are finding that inexperienced hikers trying to find their way with a phone rather than a map and compass tend to get lost very easily. Any phone can run out of battery, lose signal, or become unusable in heavy rain. Lesson: have a backup plan.

And while a purpose-built GPS unit can handle the weather, your iPhone is neither rugged nor water resistant off the shelf. So if you plan on having your iPhone with you for any serious amount of hiking, get a water resistant case that can take a beating. We like the Lifeproof ($80) case though we’re eagerly awaiting the debut of the solar powered Snow Lizard case (price and release date unknown but they are taking preorders for a $100 deposit).

Your iPhone can even help you capture great scenic pictures when you get to the top!

6 Hiking Apps We Like For the iPhone

The apps that are intended for outdoor use, like the excellent iHikeGPS, will still display a map even when the cell phone signal drops out. They do recommend carrying a paper map and compass as a backup though. iHikeGPS can show you the elevation profile of a route you’ve just hiked or want to try, collect information on speed and progress, and give you an expected arrival time just like the GPS in a car. It’s good for planning days out as well as using on the hills, and you can also share routes with friends.

Having first aid information at your fingertips can be very useful in the backwoods, and there is no shortage of good apps that will let you find what you need fast. GotoAID is one option (there is a free lite version) or there is the entirely free St John Ambulance app, which covers all kinds of minor injuries and includes information on outdoor hypothermia, heatstroke, and drowning.

The Flashlight app is another helpful freebie. It’s not intended to replace a regular torch or headtorch- another item that should be in every backpack- but it can come in very handy around the campsite.

In fact, Gary (the editor of this site) likes to tell the story of using his old iPod Nano as a flashlight as he got lost on a trail while camping and it was the only light source he had – don’t ask me why he left his flashlight at the campsite but that’s what he did. In a pinch, an iPhone flashlight can be a real life saver when the other option is no light at all and the camera’s LED flash is actually pretty bright.

As ever hiker knows, it’s not just about going the distance but about having a good time and seeing the sights along the way. For anyone who has ever stood on a high lookout and tried to figure out which mountains they could see in the distance, there’s Point de Vue. The format will familiar to users of astronomy apps- point the phone at the horizon and it’ll display the names of the peaks in front of you.

Tap a mountain and you’ll see the height and distance from your current location. There is also an option to click through to a Google map. The downside is that the peak view information does have to be downloaded in advance so do this before you leave the house.

Apps can also help you learn more about the environment you’re passing through. Take birds for example. Audubon Birds can help you figure out what an unfamiliar bird is and will also let you record your sightings. There are plenty of others that will do the same (and for less than $19.95) but what really sets this app apart is the eBirds system, which is designed to help users find rare birds that have been seen in recently in their area.

One more note of caution to finish: just make sure you don’t use up all your battery having fun with Audubon Birds and Point de Vue. Leave enough that you’ll be able to make an emergency call if necessary, even towards the end of your hike unless you plan on taking one of those creepy iPhone chargers you breathe into with you.

Jess Spate is a long-distance hiker and a rock climber. She writes for Appalachian Outdoors, a Pennsylvania-based online outdoor store.

10 Must Have iPad 2 Apps

I’ll admit it. I just didn’t understand what was cool about the iPad at first. However, I’ve found more and more plenty of times where I don’t need/want to use my laptop but my smartphone just doesn’t do the job well either and I’d be quite pleased if I had an iPad available.

It’s the kind of device that I would say isn’t the perfect device for any one task. For example, I can write a blog post using it. I can read a book on it. I can watch a movie on it. Heck, I could record, edit, and publish a movie in HD using just an iPad.

And while having a laptop, Kindle, HDTV, and video camera with wireless microphones, are better suited to doing each of those tasks, respectively, the iPad is good enough to get the job done in many cases.

The beauty of the iPad 2 really is in how well it can do so many tasks.

It’s the perfect in between device!

No, I don’t plan on replacing my TV, laptop, GPS, or anything else and using just my iPad, but its plenty good enough to get the job done and get it done well when I don’t want to use a specialized device. Add in the fact that it’s lightweight and portable and it’s really a hard to beat device and while I’m an avid Android fan and don’t want an iPhone, I do love the iPad and don’t want an Android powered tablet.

So without further adieu, here are my favorite, must have, iPad 2 apps.

As is my custom, I don’t have any games on this list and will leave that up to other gaming enthusiasts.

Netflix / OrbLive – Love watching movies or TV shows on your iPad? Then one of these apps will be perfect for you. If you only have Netflix for movie streaming then just download the free Netflix app. If you enjoying watching from Hulu, Netflix, and others, then the OrbLive app might better suit your needs. My recommendation is to start with Netflix since its free and if you need more capabilities, get the $10 OrbLive app.

FX Photo Studio HD – Sure, you iPad already has pretty good photo editing capabilities. However, FX Studio HD really takes things up a notch. It brings tons of effects and filters to the party. Check out the demo video below to see some of it’s features in action:

Google Earth – The iPad 2 and Google Earth were made for each other. Some have called this app the best you can get for you iPad. It seems like the perfect fit for exploring the planet you and I live on, Earth.

iMovie – iMovie makes editing and publishing videos a piece of cake. Record a video on your iPad, edit it, and publish it to Youtube without ever needing to tranfer the file to your Mac. You can’t get the same degree of polish as you can with Final Cut but you probably don’t need to for most things.

GarageBand – GarageBand is a great choice for composing as well as recording your own music and it’s all optimized for touchscreen only inputs. Whether you’re using it for Podcasting, recording your bands music, or just adding special effects to your audio, GarageBand makes it easy.

Pandora – I think just about every top 10 list I’ve ever made on this site mentions Pandora. There are plenty of other similar services that have popped up over the years but none has worked as well as Pandora. I highly recommend it and if you love it as much as I do, upgrade to Pandora One – the $3/month for commercial free music is well worth it.

Djay – If you ever have parties or do entertaining, this is a fantastic little app. It brings many professional DJ features straight to your iPad and for a fraction of the price.

Epicurious – This is a fantastic little recipe app. And the nice thing about using an iPad for recipes is that you can just set the iPad in your kitchen and check off steps as you go along. Epicurious can also create a shopping list for any of its recipes and it’ll sync with your iPhone so you don’t have to lug your iPad into the store or write things down separately – just bring up the list on your iPhone and use it as your grocery list. Think of all the trees you’ll save!

Instapaper – I probably learned about this app backwards. I downloaded an App for my Droid Bionic called Read It Later and thought it was the coolest thing since sliced bread. I didn’t now that it was largely the same as an iPad/iPhone app called Instapaper. It’s a simple app but it’s tremedously useful. If you’ve ever been reading a news story, magazine article, or blog post on your iPhone or iPad and not had time to finish it, this is the app for you. It saves the article you’re reading, stores it for offline reading and syncs it to all your other devices (iPhone, iOS, Mac) so you can read it on whatever device you’re using later in the day.

Blogsy – Composing a blog post on an iPad was inconvenient at best before this app came along if you wanted to do anything other than compose text. If you wanted to embed media, upload pictures, etc, then you were really in for a lot of trials and tribulations. Fortunately, Blogsy is optimized for iOS and touchscreens and adding media is as simple and pleasurable experience.

Bonus Apps I Really Like That Didn’t Make The List

Credit Card Machine – I’d have made this a “must have” app if everybody needed the ability to accept credit cards. They don’t. However, if you have a retail shop setup, you can turn your iPad into a point of sale device. There’s a chocolate shop I love to go to and they have three iPads all setup to function as cash registers. And when you consider how much traditional cash registers cost, it makes using the iPad a low cost and just as functional alternative.

TWCable TV – This one is just for people with Time Warner Cable, but if you have it, the free TWCable TV app will allow you to watch live TV on your iPad. Not all channels are available but a lot of them which means you’re no longer tethered to the living room for watching TV.

There are a lot of magazine apps available for the iPad but rather than putting specific newspapers and magazines in this list, I’ll leave the up to personal preference. I do recommend trying them out even if you only subscribe to free ones.

A couple years ago I wrote about a phone called the Samsung Galaxy Beam (Halo). It sure was a neat idea. It was an Android powered phone with a built in pico projector.

Unfortunately, the phone never made it to the United States and while phone with built in projectors are expected to be released in the coming years, there isn’t a single phone you can buy right now with this capability.

However, you can add this funtionality to your phone right now… with the Pocket Projector for the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S.

With this adapter you no longer need to have all your friend huddle around your tiny little screen to see that hilarious Youtube video and while it’s no pro level quality, it’d certainly do in a pinch during a business meeting.

For example, I know I could use then when doing an app demo with a prospective client, especially when I have two or three people in the room and we all have to huddle around my iPad.

The resolution is only 640×360 but the 15-lumen bulb is bright enough to display images clearly in a darkened room.

One nice extra perk is that the battery on the projector will charge your iPhone when it’s not in use as a projector so even when you’re not using the projector function, it will serve as a backup battery for your iPhone.

It’s priced at $229.99 when your order it directly from Brookstone.

This is one of the nice things about being an iPhone owner – all of the extra accessories you can get since the form factor is the same for millions of phone meaning it’s cost effective to develop technologies like this for third party companies.

Watch the demo video for a lot of cool use suggestions (my favorite was the watching movies in your tent while camping).

But a New York City based company called Kogeto is working to change all of that with Dot.

Dot is a 360 degree video camera adapter that snaps on directly to your iPhone 4, 4S, and now the Samsung Galaxy Nexus (Android users are no longer left out in the cold).

Here’s a short demo video just so you can see it in action.

While the technology isn’t perfect and the videos didn’t work well (they require Kogeto’s proprietary player and don’t work on Youtube) on my phone, they did play nicely on my computer and have plenty of potential.

And the nice thing is that they work break the bank. The Dot adapters cost a mere $79 so they’re extremely affordable if you want to try one out.

What do you think? Useful tool or fad? Post in the comments to let me here about it.
